Top-notch control with plenty of flexibility : Microsoft SideWinder Game Pad USB

I've noticed that other 2D-fighter fans have already complained that this controller provides very poor control, but they may have misdiagnosed the cause.

The buttons on the right side are not placed straight, they are on a 45 degree or so angle because your thumb also point in a similar angle when holding the controller. This makes your thumb relatively perpendicular with the buttons. Good design. The problem is that they forgot to do that on the other side with the D-pad. The D-pad is positioned straight up, not slanted like the face buttons. This renders the D-pad utterly useless in game which require you to use the D-pad quickly in a specific sequence, such as in fighting games. The result is that the Up-right groove feels like it should be the Up button, and the Left-Down groove feels like it should be the Down button. The thing that baffles me even more is that the cheaper Sidewinder with fewer buttons has the D-pad aligned correctly and works great. Go figure.

No matter how I try I cannot get my thumb to align properly and confortably with the D-pad.

PC gamepads can be a difficult peripheral to get right--care needs to be put into the design, the layout of pads and buttons, and the appropriate software interface. Guillemot's ThrustMaster Dual Analog Gamepad pretty much nails it.

The sturdily constructed controller features 13 action buttons, 2 analog sticks, an 8-way directional pad, and both USB and gameport interfaces. Thanks to USB, installation of the controller proves simple--you just plug it in, install the software, and play.

Molded hard rubber makes the gamepad comfortable to use, even for long periods of time. Designed like PlayStation-style gamepads, the action buttons include four on the right side of the pad, two triggers below, and four on the front. Another button rests below the two sticks, which also serve as action buttons in digital mode. While well positioned, no labels or numbers differentiate the buttons, so you'll need to get to know them.

In analog mode, the sticks work very well for racing games, such as Superbike World Championship--using one to steer and the other for acceleration and braking. Although Guillemot touts the gamepad as ideal for first-person shooters (and it works well with the sticks in analog mode), we found its best uses are for racing and action gameplay.

The ThrustMaster keyboard emulation software makes it a snap to use the controller for a variety of games, from Falcon 4.0 to Half-Life, via preset commands. You can also create your own presets easily with the Dual Analog software. It would have been nice to have more information in the physical manual about calibration and configuration, but the software manual included with the gamepad covers the issue thoroughly.

This gamepad meets all the standards of a PC controller, and with its sleek design, well-positioned buttons and pads, and excellent software, the ThrustMaster Dual Analog Gamepad hits the ground running and doesn't stop. J. Curtis

From opening the box, to installing this pad it took me less than 2 minuites.

I run windows 2000 and the pad works excellently with all the latest games, Even with emulators for obsolete consoles like the snes and megadrive.

From a long time survival horror fan : Resident Evil 4

I won't lie to anyone. The game looks as good as any other RE game made. It looks great. But the controls system is the worst system I've ever used. I bought it for the PC because everyone knows that shooters work best on PC. Gamepads aren't accurate and a mouse is the way to go.
There are NO control mapping abilities in the main menu. When you go to the controls screen, it only allows you to invert the aiming and switch aiming preset keys.
The book is no better. It says what each key does but the game will tell you to run by pressing "3". "3" has nothing to do with running. the right ctrl button controls running. I found out the game meant "ENTER". I kept pressing it and then while running, it said press "5+6". "5+6" again, have nothing to do with what it wants you to do. I tried the number keys and the keypad. I tried finding what 5+6 meant on a keypad and use those keys on the keyboard. Nothing happened. I can't go any farther since I keep dieing.
The website has ZERO help in the matter.
I agree with the other rater that said the box lies and says a mouse is compatible. YEAH RIGHT!
